Power converters for FAIR
As a part of in-kind contribution to the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Germany, SMPCS has been actively involved in design, design reviews, feasibility studies, pre-prototype developments, testing and evaluation of power converters for FAIR. SMPCS has been involved in the design, development and testing of some of the pre-prototype power converters for FAIR. Based on this design, technical and engineering inputs regarding development, testing and qualification, the two and four-quadrant power converters rated for +/-300 A output current (79 nos.) and four-quadrant power converters rated for +/-100 A output current (48 nos.) have been manufactured and qualified under SMPCS guidance at ECIL, Hyderabad and have been delivered to FAIR. The first-of-series prototype of +/-400 A power converter has also been developed, tested and qualified. These power converters are developed based on switch-mode power converter technology using IGBT bridge converter. The batch of +/- 300 A power converter happens to be the first in-kind contribution to FAIR from India.
