The Accelerator Power Supplies Division (APSD) is involved in research and development of various type of power converters required primarily for various accelerators at RRCAT.
Over the years, a large number of power converters based on various power converter topologies have been designed, developed and successfully deployed for various applications. The application requirements and specifications of the power converters are diversified: the power rating ranges from few watts to few 100s of kilo watts; the output is ac as well as dc; stability of the load current varies in the range of 0.005 to 0.1 per cent of full load.
The power electronics technology is rapidly progressing with the motive of miniaturization, higher efficiency and better power quality. Therefore, emphasis is on the development and application of state-of-art technologies, topologies, components and control methodology.
The three sections, namely, High Voltage Systems Section (HVSS), Precision Power Supplies and Control Section (PPSCS) and Pulsed Power Supplies Section (PPSS), respectively, caters to various requirements pertaining to Indus complex, Infra-red Free Electron Laser (IRFEL) complex, and other important applications like high voltage power converters, explosive detectors, laser diode drivers, atom cooling experiment, electroplating, etc. The division also consists of three labs namely Transformer Design & Fabrication Lab, Pulsed Power Lab and Precision Power Control Lab, respectively.
APSD is also involved in research and development of power converters for international projects like Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR), Germany.
