Switch Mode Power Converter Section (SMPCS)

SMPCS is involved in design and development of power converters for electromagnets of Indus-1 and Indus-2 synchrotron radiation sources, Infra-red Free Electron Laser (IRFEL) and other applications. SMPCS is also involved in design and development of power converters for Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Germany.

Working mainly with the switch-mode, hard-switching as well as soft-switching power converter topologies, the team has gained expertise in the analysis and design of various power converters, feedback control design, high-frequency magnetic components, electromagnetic compatibility issues etc. Highly stable output-current-controlled power converters for electromagnet with stability up to 10 ppm have been developed.

In addition to ongoing projects, SMPCS is also involved in development of FPGA based digital controller for high-stability magnet power converters, modeling and analysis of reliability of power converters. A new family of resonant converters, called the resonant immittance converters, has been identified that has myriad of applications and fetching the attention of researchers worldwide. Many applications such as a crow-bar-less high-voltage power converter, ultra-capacitor charger, induction heating power converters have been developed using the resonant immittance converters.
