  Clean and Green Campus Activities

At Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, concerted and coordinated efforts have been made for sustainable development of the campus. Our innovative approach for developing an eco-friendly institutional culture covers all aspects, like waste management, energy conservation, rain water harvesting, e-governance, plantation drives, clean campus campaign and public awareness programmes. The key to this model is integrating all sections of the community into various stages of the planning and implementing process. This integrated approach model has a potential to be applied also in other facets of institutional working to improve the effectiveness of policy implementation at ground level.

RRCAT, an R&D unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, is working in frontline areas of accelerators, lasers, related technologies and their applications. Its 760 hectare campus comprises 583 hectare technical area and 177 hectare residential colony for staff and their dependents. The challenges towards sustainable development of RRCAT campus were: effective implementation of waste disposal procedures, reducing consumption of paper stationery in official work, water conservation and inculcating environmental friendly practices among the campus community. These challenges are being met by a small but effective modification in the development process through introduction of two committees in the loop, viz., the Advisory Committee for Infrastructure Development (ACID) and the Advisory Committee for Clean and Green Campus (ACCGC).
